Default Can someone help me fix this AK47 magazine?

When I bought this it was completely stuck, I got it to go down after a tremendous amount of work, I took out the internals and wiped any rust, but when I put the internals back in, it's not going back up all the way. Any tips to fix? It looks like it's getting stuck on the side as the last photo shows.

find where it is sticking and widen that portion a bit. It's close to the top, so that should be a fairly easy.

How do you widen that portion?

looks deformed, I would not use it (parts mag). but, probably you could spread the top some to get it to come up freely.

Are the sides bulged out? Could be rust underneath causing it to swell.

Keep the spring, follower, floor plate and throw the tube away. Then spend 12 or so and replace the mag.

Likely bulged by rust. You'll have to grind the spot where it's sticking with a dremel.

Mags are wear items and should be replaced when they fail. Unless this is some collectors item that you don’t intend use, keep the internals and trash it.

Should be an easy fix. Prolly take me 10-15 minutes and zero power tools.
You'll have to break it down completely and work at the mag body from the bottom. It's near impossible to reform it from the top because of the feed lips. I have my own custom jig made of wood that will slide up the mag body all the way to the top.
By the looks of it though from your pics, that one might be fixable from the top. Hard to say, hard to tell. I have so many ways of fixing misfit mags.
If you don't want to mess with it, let me know. If you want to PM me and go through a process, let me know that as well.

its hard to tell by pics wtf is going on, but in this case a c-clamp looks like a tool I would use. the bottom left almost looks like something let loose, tighten it down there and see what happens.

If you remove the base plate, follower & spring, you may be able to gently squeeze the follower ever-so-slightly narrower (with a vise). Only enough to free it up without deforming it. Or perhaps stick a flat tip screwdriver, or some duckbill pliers down the top of the body & pry it slightly wider where it sticks. Use some oil on the parts for lube.

Or, you may be able to free up the follower by gently squeezing the body fore & aft in a vise, but only where it sticks. Or gently tap it there with a mallet.

Sometimes, in surplus mags that have gotten wet, corrosion/rust forms between the layers of steel in that area. If you notice, there is a thin layer of steel laminated in the exact area of the top of the magazine body. The rust in between the layers, causing them to swell, hindering the follower. Nothing you can do, except as above, to slightly widen the body. But then the mag won't fit in the mag well so you'll have to file/grind the outside of the magazine (just under the feed lips) to make it fit.

Try to avoid doing anything to the follower. I mean anything at all. No need making things worse.

Retire it & use it as a beer bottle opener (unless there is something really special about it).

Steel mags are cheap, save the parts and trash the body.

Trade secrets on fixing milsurp mags? Maybe you could send it out in code, so only us members that have a captain crunch super secret decoder ring can get in on this obvious gold mine of info.

Where should I send the ring? You can post your shipping address here or you could be discrete and PM me. It's up to you. I won't be held responsible for any excess fan mail you receive if you post it here.

As for reading some of the replies in this thread, it's kind of obvious what's wrong with America these days. Nobody wants to spend a little time fixing things. If it's broken or doesn't work right, just throw it away. This is why your government and rule of law is going to change dramatically. You'll have something NEW and just do away with the existing. There will be no dumpster diving to get anything back though. So just be prepared for that.

I cut a piece of plate the shape of a follower, attached it to a rod and hammer it through the mag body to relieve dents.

no patent pending or trade secret here- have at it.

Unless you had a pile of them to "fix", the time and effort just to make the tool and use it costs more than just tossing the mags and getting new ones.

Such a waste.

yeah "Such a Waste"

a cheap harbor freight cut off wheel cost about what ?
- a dollar
maybe a dollar's worth of scrap metal
a couple of zaps with mig
a dollar or two worth of electric power

& about 30 mins of my time...

& yeah,
- I had a pile of the dented mags from sgammo's dented mag sales
& about 20 or so that were Non functioning & now work fine (all except for one (01) the feed lips were broken loose at the rear corners..

but yeah-- probably Not worth the effort to those without the skill to use a few tools.

a curved piece of rod to follow the curve of the magazine would make it easier to keep the block square to the "work" so to speak

you could probably accomplish the same thing with a block of wood and some large flat screw driver or pry bar depending on where in the mag body the dents are.

Post a picture of it smashed with a hammer, then send me a PM with your address and I'll send you a new mag......FREE!

Because life is too short to deal with defective mags.

RamRod, do you think you can get a dent out of the corner of a Chinese mag?
It won't let the follower past the dent, it is located right along the edge where it's folder over.
My buddy is a Dent-less Hail Repairer and he couldn't get it squared up.
I'll need to find the follower, baseplate, and spring.

When your brake rotors wear down to thin the be turned, do you build them back up with weld?

Do you re-stuff your own airbags after an accident?

When you shoot out a barrel do re-rifle it?

Some things are not made to be repaired. I do agree that people do treat to many things as disposable, but this is different.

similar to auto body work, I use a boxwrench . when the wrench is under the dent, turn it 90 degrees, light touch with the body hammer, using the wrench as a small anvil. Also have some steel pieces about 1and 1/2 by 2 inches by 3/8 th inch thick ,they fit in the mag body, and can be used for multiple dents. A small prybar can be used sometimes . These got a wire wheel treatment , and a coat of black Semi Gloss engine paint. Got all 10 of the U Fix Ems from SG ammo to function perfectly with very little work. If they are really far gone, dissemble for spares tho. Two of the Yugo mags in that 10 pack only needed a wipe down with an oily rag, and had a real nice blued finish. No rust at the feed lip area, these I would scrap, once the rust creeps under the joint, it will cause more grief as far as being reliable, in my experience.
