Default Would you cut the front sling loop off your SGL-21-66 to install a longer rail?

Title pretty much says it all. It already has a MI rail from Arsenal since it's the -66 model. I am a big guy and would like to move my hand out further than the short forend on the AK allows.

If it was a WASR, I woulda cut it off yesterday, but I am cringing thinking about doing this mod on my SGL. Thoughts???

*****Not gonna do it based on quick, level headed responses below. SGL retains the sling loop!*******

No way, I'd mod the furniture before the rifle

Not on an SGL. If I did, I would be sure to have a Russian made replacement in hand before doing any cutting in case I had regrets. But it's your rifle so do as you please.

No. Not at all. Never would I do that to something I care about. How many pieces of attachments can you buy and never cut the rifle? Which is more prudent? Nope. Never

Ok, the quick responses have shown me one thing for sure...

When I come up with a dumb idea, it's usually a really, really, fucked up one. Go big or go home I guess.

SGL sling loop lives! I will Dremel a notch in the aluminum handguards. Thanks!

Now that is what I call a smart man. Ask advice and use it. Now don't cut yourself modifying replaceable parts.

But we do need pics or it ain't real.

OP has seemingly already made up his mind, but just in case. You guys know me a bit by now and the language I typically use...so when i say Holy Shit, Goddamnit, Fuck Me, Hell No.
I hope it conveys the seriousness of such a question/answer.

The SGL isn't any more accurate, reliable, or even really more durable than any other AK. What sets it apart and makes it special is the fact that it is a true Izhmash built AK. That and the fact it is now banned from further importation.
By all means shoot and enjoy your Izhmash and Molot rifles, just know that most of their value now lies in their collectible nature. So don't do something that will radically harm this.

Friends don't let friends do things they know they'll regret in the future. 100% its your rifle. Also 99% that if you cut on it now, you'd punch yourself in the face in a year or two. So all we're doing is protecting future you from present you.

Anyway, plenty of other high quality rifles that are assembled here in the USA that you could modify. Atlantic's WBP Classic comes to mind (why pay for the CG1 if you are a shooter more than collector).

I subscribe to measure twice cut once, and do it slow. Hopefully it will turn out as well as the above poster. I have cut many front sight bases off of AR's, but not much aluminum work so I will go very slow!

Parts are ordered, so I will show you the finished product.

I wonder if that front sling loop gets hot enough to melt rail covers. I do not, and never will do, a mag dump. In any type of real world scenarios I would be in, ammo conservation and solid hits prevent me from getting my barrel overly hot for no reason. That said, it still gets warm.

It doesn't get terribly hot, at least not during normal use.

Anyone want to see my dremmel skills? lol

I have a story regarding post 12. We had to tie an air handling unit into an existing system, we measured here and there and here and there again. We cut the pipe. When we went to make the connection we were 1" high. We cut 1" off the pipe and again attempted to make the connection and were 1" low. Now understand that myself and the other 2 pipefitters had 70 years experience between us. We added the 1" of pipe back and it was perfect. We never figured it out but I (after 30 years) have not forgotten that day.

Troy sells a longer rail that doesnt require any modification. I had one and thought it was well made and installed easy.

OP, for a piss stripe you have taken well to the hivemind of the files.

Congrats for avoiding a disaster waiting to happen. I hope that the mod to the handguard works out well. As a general rule, for ANYTHING (not just AK's) that is collectible, do not do any mods that aren't completely reversible.

I bought a used SGL-21 with a Midwest Industries rail that the previous owner hacked off the sling loop. I would not hack one off my own rifle.

Yeah why would you cut the sling loop off a $1200+ rifle and decrease the value of it when you could just cut out a slot in the rail ? That makes no sense.
You're gonna end up paying hundreds more dollars than you wanted too for that rail if you ever go to re-sell the rifle.

But I don't blame the Bubbas of the world for Bubba-ing. I blame the retarded companies who make AK rails that force people to cut off or remove these things in the first place.
