Default Odd Norinco 84S-1 underfolder

Iím hoping I can get some good info regarding a Norinco 84S-1 underfolder I just picked up.

It came with 1-30 round and 2-10 round mags. The barrel is stamped CAI ST ALBANY VT which I know is Century Arms. The barrel length measured on a closed bolt is 19.5Ē. The muzzle had a a tack-welded brake on it which Iíve removed and installed the proper slant brake. The brake was an odd star shape that Iíve never seen before but appeared to be factory original.

The front sight is un-neutered and is a proper pre-ban FSB. The bayo lug has been ground off. The right side of the receiver is stamped MAK90 in very small letters. The left side of the receiver has all the normal production stamping to include the SN, 84S-1, Made in China, the Norinco logo and the triangle /66\ stamp. All numbers match except the dust cover. The underfolder locks up nice and tight.

The rifle is in great shape and had zero issues with a couple hundred rounds of American Eagle at the range yesterday.

Iím guessing it was caught in the early stages of the ban but am trying to figure out the 19.25Ē barrel. Maybe a Canadian import originally?

Thoughts?

The photo you posted over on AKForum, the stock does not appear to be Chinese. I was wondering if your rifle was a reclaimed Mak-90 variant ? Is there any evidence of a once welded-on rear tang, or any lightly stamped X's near or over the 84S-1 trunnion model number ?

With that barrel length I'd say possibly Canadian as well.

Your newly added photos show Mak-90 stamped on the receiver under the charging handle, it's not 84s-1 but rather an "under folder ready" Mak-90 that the importer (or someone) forgot to stamp X X X over the 84S-1 roll marks. This is why it has a Romanian UF stock installed. Sorry.

Serial number probably in the 601XXX range--- Canadian version with 19" barrel--- still marked 84S/S-1 on the left receiver, but marked MAK-90 on the right receiver (right)!!!

I tried loading pictures but it kept failing for some reason so thanks Go No Go for helping me out. With a lot of great input from folks on this site and AK Forums I have a much better idea of what this rifle has going on. Basically it’s a 19” Canadian import 84S-1/MAK 90 with a Romanian under folder. I’ll be keeping an eye out for a Chinese stock to make it complete.

I'm sure it's a great rifle but it simply looks awkward with that long ass barrel in an underfolder configuration.

Itd be cooler if it was fixed stock. I’d put one of those polytech national match cone flash hiders on it and have a unique little shooter.

I agree it does look odd with that long barrel. I’ve got a Chinese underfolder stock on the way. I’m just going to keep it in the original configuration but will look at either having a bayo lug welded on or getting a Bulgarian or Polish gas block to complete the de-banning.
