Default American Made Steel Mags 7.62x39?

So Iím in the midst of de-neutering my Norinco Mak-90. The route Iím trying to take, is one that requires little to no changing internal parts. The trigger in this rifle is superb! Itís a smooth consistent trigger and really donít want to change it.

So from my research to make this in compliance with 922r, and to return it to it glorious original state, it canít have more than 10 foreign parts.

1. Receiver
2. Barrel
3. Trunnion
4. Bolt
5. Bolt Carrier
6. Piston
7. Trigger
8. Disconnecter
9. Hammer
10. Pistol grip
11. Stock
12. Foregrips
13. Mag body
14. Mag Follower
15. Mag floor Plate

My plan of action , in order to keep the guts of this thing as original as I can, is to replace 10-15. Iím ordering Ironwood Designs T56 furniture set. My only dilemma is I really donít want to have this looking all original, and be running a stupid magpul polymer mag in it.

So are there any American made steel mags? Iíve come across SGM tactical who advertise 922r compliant polymer mags, they also offer steel mags, but isnít marked anywhere that itís 922r compliant. Iíve emailed them and Iíll see if I hear back. But does anyone have any information on them? Or other American Made Steel mags?

None that you want to waste your money on, no.

Your rifle does not have a foregrip ( and adding a US-made one will not help your parts count )

The easiest path ( IMHO ) is to change out the gas piston for a US-made version.

Nobody'll see it.

It'll work just like the factory part.

It's easy to change out.

I should have said handguards. Those do in fact count as one part of I’m not mistaken right?

Well do you know of any companies I could get some? At the very least I could take the floor plates and followers out of them and put them in a couple of my Hungarian mags.

Also idea for gas piston? Any particular company I should look for?

Just got off the phone with SGM Tactical and their steel mags are not American made. Did not specify where they were made.

The lower handguard & gas tube cover must be US-made to count.

If you're not using a traditional gas tube ( or have decided to not run one with a cover ), the origin of the LHG is what matters.

The only US company that I know of that makes steel AK mags produce absolute shit and I would not even recommend them for parts.

AK-Builder, Crapco, [ insert name of other known-good AK parts vendors here ]

The AK gas piston is such a simple thing, even the fly-by-night jobbers can't really screw it up.

For one of my russians outfitted in rusian wood, I use a Magpul when out in public.

I also have an Izhmash slab side with an american floor plate and follower. You really can't tell the difference. Two out of three isn't bad.

So, for me it's 3 in the trigger, 1 in the muzzle device and 2 in the mag.

MY other 2 russians have trigger group, arsenal grip and hand guard and muzzle device.

The arsenal grip and hand guard are great copies.

Chinese, though I am less acquainted. And with the trigger group foreign uffda.

oh ya, and CNC warrior.

they make pistons. yours, IDK.

It's been a while but i think it was AK-builder.

http://ak-builder.com/index.php?disp...oduct_id=30874

and

http://ak-builder.com/index.php?disp...oduct_id=29988

the follower is OOS, unfortunately.

I used them on a slab side because they looked identical.

ps: I used to live in fremont and omaha.

From our Marketplace, among other sources.

Over the years, various folks have run small lots of floorplates & followers for both 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 magazines and sold them here & other places.

Clearview Investments sells US made magazine followers.
http://www.clearviewinvest.com/akmag...etalusmfg.aspx

I have some, but can't comment on how well they function as I haven't tried using them yet.

Another option if you're only one part short of 922r compliance, you can replace the Chinese disconnector with a US made one. Properly fitted it should make little difference in the "feel" of the trigger pull.

Out of curiosity I tried the Clearview US made follower in a few magazines. Chinese, Romanian, and Hungarian. It fit well in the Chinese and Hungarian mags, but in the Romanian mag it was a little tight a the top of its' travel. It would probably would work fine with some minor fitting.

The quality looks comparable to the original followers, same approximate weight and gauge of sheet metal, number of spot welds etc..

Of course none of the above is a substitute for actually testing while firing the rifle. So keep that in mind.

On the downside I see no made in US markings on them.

The law does not require markings of origin.

I didn't think US markings were required by law. Just pointing out there are no markings.

You need to replace 5 of the parts on your list for USA made. Assuming the barrel is mot threaded
The Ironwood furniture is pricey and obviously not Chinese.
The gas piston, magazine floorplate and follower and disconnector and hammer would be the least noticeable and reasonably priced.
As noted US markings are not required. You can save the sellers information on the part and the receipt if you wish.
Personal knowledge is sufficient and the ATF or LEO shoulder the burden of proof that a part is not USA made.
Some are obvious as there are few USA made bolts or carriers etc.

Thanks for all the great info! Ive placed my preorder with ironwood designs, for the furniture set. Now my plan is to order the floor plate and followers, and swap out the disconnecter with a ALG-Akt I have in the garage. Then should be good to go.

You only need to swap 5 parts if the muzzle is not threaded.
Furniture (buttstock, pistol grip, handguards) = 3, floorplate = 1, follower = 1

I've always heard there was like TWO(2) 922r indictments ever and they were both add ons to a bunch of other charges.

Since finding this out, I'm not gonna sweat it. The whole law is stupid as hell, I mean 3 parts for a magazine? Really?

I always am 922r compliant and when 30 round mags are illegal, I'll be sure to turn them all in.

Just placed my order with AK-Builder for 3x floorplates 3x followers, and I have some bids on some 40rd Chinese magazines. Hopefully will have everything in the next following weeks.
