"they store the ammo in tension once loaded, ready to discharge."
Isn't that hard on springs?

Use is what wears on spring steel.

That's the same way standard ak magazines hold ammo as well. It won't wear it out

^^^^what he said. Being stored under pressure is Ok for the springs, repeated flexing wears them out.

I knew that was the case for regular mags, I leave some loaded w/ no worries. I always read where you should not keep a top loader drum loaded and rear loaders can be unwound for storage.

Good to know. That makes them a little more practical.

I’ve heard top loaders are okay to keep loaded, but rear loaders need to be unwound. This is the first time I’m hearing different. I’ve almost lost a finger or two on several occasions trying to unload my rear loader lol.

Has anyone here ever managed to get the two leather interior tabs on these pouches to lock on the nipple? Makes a Rubik's cube seem easy. If someone knows a trick, please share. I'm tired of fixing holes in the sheetrock.

I tried many times and only on one did they go on. That pouch was old n crusty and the leather was worn but stretchy , i mink oiled all the leather and let it sit for a few months before messing with it . Much to my surprise they stretched over the nipple. Not sure if it was the mink oil or if they would have locked on before that as i didn't try before minking

Didn't seem like much of a deal to me and you helped to confirm it.
Besides, I prefer back loading.

Well, some like top loaders, some like back loaders.
These are Romanian military surplus. Some AKs will work better with top loaders, more clearance.
For the top loading drum, with a pouch, it is a decent price

I think the issue with storing top loaders (at least some) with ammo in them isn't the springs but the sheet metal feed lips possibly deforming.

Folks these are RPK Drums and pouches that were able to source when we got some of the RPK Rifle kits in. They are not new commercial production AK drums

Id probably buy a few of these if the package didnt come with the word "firearms" on the shipping label. Nobody (including the mail man or neighbors) needs to know what type of product is in the box sitting on my porch.

Got one from Atlantic. Price was competitive, product is good. I ripped a tab trying to get it over the nipple, but that's on me lol.

I didn't either for a long time.
But I think having at least one is good for training purposes and why not run a chest rig with your 30's and the one in the rifle is a 75 round drum?

Me: Initial thought of having a drum into running it in as the primary.

I didnt think I wanted one either until I got a rear loader recently. Lots of fun and just plain cool. Plus its good to at least be familiar with using and loading them. It does look great on the rpk too!

Yea, definitely operator error and has nothing to do with the design....None of mine have ever done that either.

The drums were kinda what got me into Ak's...75 round Chicom rear loaders were 39$ back in the early 90's, so I bought 3 when I bought my first AK (56s Sile transitional MAK90, welded muzzle nut, cleaning rod, ground lug).
The top loaders are gtg, they've been used in combat zones by various groups and have gained a reputation for reliability.
