Default WASR has no date?

Hello everyone, I am new to both AK’s and this forum. I’m sorry if this has been posted before, I did search first but didn’t find anything about this particular issue.

I recently acquired a WASR 10/63 from a pawn shop. It had been Tapco’d out and pretty neglected, but I got it for a steal because of it. In the process of replacing the plastic with wood and cleaning it up, I noticed the serial number is only four digits. To be exact, it is FL**55. From what I understand, WASR’s have a serial number like A1234-XX with the “XX” being the date of production. This gun lacks those last two digits completely. They aren’t worn or scrubbed off, they are simply not there.

At first I thought maybe it’s a trunnion off another gun, but it’s a 100% matching gun aside from the dust cover. Any ideas on why there’s no date?

The letters correspond to year of manufacture

Ahh okay interesting. Is there a guide to determining what letters correspond with what year?

I've never heard of the letters = date mfg on Romanian AKs.

The military guns I've seen had a 4 digit datecode, while the civilian/commercial had a 2 digit.

Most all Comblock guns have an alpha-numeric serial system.
Typically, the letters are random-ish and don't mean much aside from production block.

Just my experience though *shrug*.

Maybe a silly question but are you sure there isnt a four digit date to the left of the serial number?

Is serial number electro penciled or does it have the triangle arsenal stamp?
Pictures always help.

Unfortunately can’t upload a picture at the moment but I will try to later. The trunnion has a triangle with an arrow in it and next to that is “FL**55”. Those are the only markings on the trunnion, and they are stamped not electro penciled.
