Default Arsenal Russian SGL21 rifles are skyrocketing in price

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/569824970

Every time I look one is selling for more than the last. Can't say I ever thought I would see the day a NIB SGL21 was a 3K rifle.

Why? Nothing all that special about them, don't get me wrong I love mine, its just not some super performing AK.

Great rifle. Foolish buyer IMO. Then again everything is worth what someone will pay so I guess it's worth over 3 grand

That's great! I'd say supply and demand, but mostly foolish buyers. Let the price go up if that's what they are willing to pay. I'll sell off one of my Russian Krebs rifles and use the money for two more SCARs!

I don't get why people get caught up in bidding and drive up prices like that. You could get something nice and pre-ban for that kind of money.

Have you seen SCAR 17 prices lately? Looks like $4K is the average now.

That's a great price for the owner, I always think that in some instances a person with unlimited funds says fuck you to everyone and bids to win, in this case there might be more than a few people who can afford to throw several grand at it. Looks like the AK market is mirroring tech stocks when they first hit the market years ago.

Could have converted so many saigas with that money..
Jeeezus. Throwing that kind of money around, might as well just buy a real Ak ( full auto ).

Lol big difference between $3,000 & $19,000.

As far as the SGL-21's go, since I own one I'm pretty damn happy with this turn of events.

Wow, crazy times. I would consider selling mine for that money, if I could keep a straight face on the one hand, or my conscience didn't bother me on the other.

No worries. I got lucky and picked up a second 17 from my local gun store, from a buyer that backed out.

Not that I would sell mine, but if something jumps to ridiculous prices that i can replace later (and is extra) it's time to sell it off.

As long as you aren't selling off your only rifle, you can use the money for ammo or something else. During one of the last panics I had people bid up 5.56 ball ammo I had for auction up to 80 cents a round! I was able to replace it with double the amount of 5.45!

Supply and demand. Many years ago when we had our own state assault weapons ban, we were stuck with the SKS and Mini 14 as the only semi automatic rifles you could own. At that time I would have paid a premium for ANYTHING decent when you think you may never be allowed to own a AR/AK again.

Some people have the money to spend and would rather buy than miss the boat.

I had one of the newer Stinger Pen guns I bought new around 2000. I had the extra .17 HMR and .22 Magnum barrels for it. I think I paid less than $250 for the entire setup.

About 5+ years ago I sold it on Gunbroker, it got bid up to over $2000!!! I bought one of my Krebs and a couple cases of Golden Tiger for that!

I own one too, which I bought for $500, but I would much rather have them readily available for a decent price. I bought it to enjoy it not lock it up, never shooting it, in order to maximize the returns from my "investment". When some item, like a gun or a car, becomes too valuable they lose their relevance for their original purpose.

You can pick one up for like $1500 still, that price is just wish thinking.

I just settled for Bulgarians myself. I should have picked up an SGL way back when they where $800 but I never did. Now they are stupid priced and I will never own one.
Same category as Chinese guns to me now. Very cool but not cool enough to spend double what they are actually worth imo. An AK, is an AK, is a tool. They all do the same thing.

I agree to a point, during the last panics we had I could have sold off some rifles for a ridiculous profit. But if you sell them you take the gamble of not being able to replace them.

Some rifles I won't sell, unless I'm making enough of a profit that I can replace it with something equal or better than it.

Only sell "extra" guns and not your SHTF guns. Also, if the SHTF all your decent firearms will become priceless anyway. I got all mine to shoot and not be a safe Queen, but if the price is right, sell. I just sold off 4 new AES-10B's (kept one) because the price doubled, to fund a SCAR.

The way I see it the Saiga based rifles are going to become collectors items soon unless the " ban" on them is lifted ? And I don't see that ever happening as is the case with the Chinese AK's.

Don't get me wrong, I'd gladly see the value of my 21 taken back down to $800 if it meant the sanctions were lifted & we all had access to Russian AK's again. I'm not that selfish a prick.

As far as shooting it goes, I still pull mine out & shoot it regularly. It's well broken in at this point, probably 2K rounds or so, so putting more rounds down the barrel isn't going to change the value much. Used is used.

But it's nice to own things that are worth 3x what you paid for them.

I paid about $1100 for mine just a few months ago. What the hell happened to their value??

I mean, technically they are prebans now, but I can definitely see economic sanctions lifted with Russia. Trade deals with them are unlike the Chinese deals of yesteryear.

They will lift everything except arms sanctions. Why do you think they included arms in the sanction in the first place?

My Guesses:

1. Shill bidding
2. Buyer will back out

Regardless, tons of guys with a SGL21s will now think their rifles are worth $3K.

That seller has had several sgl21's listed over the last couple of weeks, even a couple of the rare sgl22-94's all selling in the $2500-3000+ range.
