Default Century m70ab2 catastrophic failure

So this is a friend of mine having a rifle kaboom in his face. He was cut on his forehead pretty good. Rifle was a Century m70ab2. I actually bought the rifle maybe 6 to 7 years ago, put about 5,000 rounds thru it and sold it to my friend about 3.5 years ago. He has put about 3,000-3,500 rounds through it (so about 8,000 is the round count on the rifle at time of kaboom) and then this happened. My question is what do you guys think caused this particular failure. Maybe headspace opened up too much? maybe round not fully in the chamber? maybe the round was too hot? IDK, im just curious and want to see what everyone else thinks. My friend is a good kid but honestly he's not the brightest when it comes to firearms, meaning if there was something wrong with his rifle he probably wouldn't know. I wasn't there when this blew up but I had him text message me the video, however the quality is super garbage. I apologize about that. the original video is HD, im going to try and get ahold of it. P.S. if there is anyone who is not computer illiterate like me that knows how to make the video quality any better pm me and I can text you the video.

I hope your friend is alright. Good thing he is wearing glasses. What do I think caused this particular failure? Century Arms.

Being that you said he isn't the brightest, one has to wonder how he got that cast on his leg.

no- parts kit gun contract build for century arms. Early guns had orig barrel-
newer guns have US barrel. Generally loved and well done.

This is the first time I've heard of a faliure in the AB2. They receive high praise all the time as well built guns because century didn't build them, they contracted the job out to someone that actually knows what they're doing. I wouldn't let this one isolated incident sway my opinion of them being a good gun.

I don't see how anyone can figure this out on the basis of the video.

Did he save the cartridge case? Any pictures of the chamber area?

Kinda curious as to why he was filming himself shooting a rifle he's already put 3500 rounds through, anyway. Does he record every shot for posterity?

We would need to see the rifle to possibly determine what happened.

Pictures of the rifle would help the guys with experience who can identify what the issue was.

I'm particularly curious.
As TheGreek stated...they're pretty solid rifles.
I never would have expected this from an M70AB2

Shit. The dust cover was under lots of pressure. And they even have a pin and reinforced trunnion to take shit tons of pressure for grenades. Wow. And it whapped him good.I have the same rifle and I have shot it lots. I have noticed my barrel pin may be egging.is that an easy fix?

He already has a cast on. I think it’s devil spirits causing him to be accident prone. For real though I’d be very curious to know what happened to that ab2. One vote to ship it out to Mel. These are made with full auto trunnuns and shit from the 80’s

Bolt carrier came off the rails maybe? I'm guessing just the top cover is what went flying?
Guy was lucky no real serious injury.
I also vote for closer pics of the damage to the rifle.
I'm under 1K rounds through my M70AB2, but if it's only going to be good for 8K I'd really like to know.

Squib round previously stuck in the barrel? Anyone's guess right now I suppose.

There's thousands of those guns out there and this is the first time I've heard of a catastrophic failure of one. I highly doubt that it's indicative of the quality of them. But, if you're that worried about it I'll give ya 300 bucks shipped for it so that you don't have to worry about it failing on you...

Exactly. It could be caused by many things and until we know exactly what caused it then all we're doing is playing the speculation game.

The violence required to pop the top cover off like that would need something hitting it. Squip likely overcharging the carrier, forcing it back to violently, poping off the reciever, and knocking the cover off. Looks like the carrier stays on the rifle though.

Has to be based on a squib. Of if the first round, maybe the owner did not reassemble the rifle correctly? Never done it.....but is it possible to put bolt and carrier in without setting down into reciever rails??? Doubt it.....

I meant that it is a used trunnion from a prior real military rifle

The question about the bolt is a no. There is no room if the bolt is not on the rails.

WOW! Glad your friend is OK...

Yes to pictures of the rifle, inside top cover...I wonder if there could have been some blockage in the barrel?

Hey guys so i'll get pics of the rifle and post them up in the next few days, I'll try to be very thorough. This particular rifle was solid as a tank when I owned it, no problems what so ever. This guy races motocross so he has a cast on about 50% of his life lol. Forgot to mention he was shooting Tula Ammo.

I'd think a case head failure would blow off a top cover, especially if it were not fit well. Some of these ab2's we're fit pretty goofily; however, they looked good to the untrained eye

Makes me wonder why that one shot was filmed.. in slo-mo yet.. 8,000 rounds later. Think maybe your friend knew a little more than he's willing to admit?

That video makes me shudder since I basically had the same thing happen to me. Mine was a Century AMD-65 build, left a nice little scar on my hand. This was around 2005, and ever since I never bought another Century build again!

From what I see there are no indications of any muzzle blast whatsoever....

After watching that, I say squib.

It's almost like it was set up...

And since he sustained an injury from it something tells me a lawsuit against century is on the way shortly...

It makes me wonder about his leg, was it an injury that resulted in a lawsuit?

hahaha you got to be kidding me. Some of you should take your tinfoil helmet off, it's making you say stupid things. Shit happens, this kid isn't going to sue anybody lol (I doubt that has even crossed his mind) Me and him are just curious, nobody's out for a paycheck.

Yeah because stuff like that has never happened before. Nobody has ever staged an accident to incur a minor injury with the intent to sue a company with deep pockets for all they can get. Everyone in society is decent and honest, right?

We don't know your friend from Jack, for all we know he's a scam artist looking for a Payday.

hahaha nope not kidding. And not saying that's the case. Saying that it could be the case. Because yeah, plenty of stupid people do stupid shit. Even just for attention.
